Why speed matters more for emergencies

Emergency HVAC calls are your highest-margin jobs. They’re also the most time-sensitive leads you’ll ever get. A homeowner whose AC died at midnight isn’t browsing. They’re not comparing three quotes. They want the first company that answers.

Google’s data is clear: 53% of mobile visitors leave after 3 seconds. For emergency searches, it’s worse. These users have zero patience. If your site doesn’t load almost instantly, they’re gone.

The behavior pattern is brutally simple. An emergency searcher clicks a result, waits 2-3 seconds, and if nothing useful appears, they hit back and try the next result.   1. Open your phone (not your computer — mobile is what matters)
  2. Go to PageSpeed Insights
  3. Enter your website URL
  4. Look at the “Largest Contentful Paint” number under mobile

Under 2.5 seconds: You’re in good shape. Emergency searchers will see your content before their patience runs out.

2.5-4 seconds: You’re losing some emergency leads. Every tenth of a second above 2.5 seconds costs you conversions.

Over 4 seconds: You’re losing most of them. At this speed, the majority of emergency searchers will hit back before they ever see your phone number.

Understanding Core Web Vitals

Google measures site speed using three Core Web Vitals. Each one affects how visitors experience your site:

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — Target: under 2.5 seconds This measures when the main content becomes visible. For HVAC sites, it’s typically the hero image or the main headline. If your LCP is slow, visitors see a blank or partially loaded page for several seconds.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — Target: under 200ms This measures how quickly your site responds when someone taps a button or link. If your site has heavy JavaScript, tapping “Call Now” might feel sluggish or unresponsive. For emergency callers, this is maddening.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — Target: under 0.1 This measures how much content moves around as the page loads. If your phone number appears at the top, then an image loads above it and pushes it down the screen, that’s layout shift. The caller is trying to tap a number that keeps jumping away from their finger.

All three matter, but LCP is the most critical for emergency conversions. If the page doesn’t appear within 2.5 seconds, the other metrics don’t matter — the visitor is already gone.

What’s slowing your site down

Unoptimized images

The most common culprit. A single high-resolution photo of your truck can be 5MB. On a 4G mobile connection (the most common connection type for on-the-go searches), that’s 8-10 seconds of download time for one image.

The fix is straightforward:

  • Convert all images to WebP format (50-80% smaller than JPEG at the same quality)
  • Resize to the maximum display size (a phone screen doesn’t need a 4000x3000 pixel image)
  • Target under 100KB per image — this looks identical on a phone screen
  • Use loading="lazy" on all images below the fold so they don’t block the initial page load

A site with 20 images at 5MB each loads 100MB of data. The same site with optimized images loads 2MB. That’s the difference between an 18-second load time and a 2-second load time.

Cheap shared hosting

If you’re paying $5/month for hosting, you’re sharing a server with hundreds of other websites. The server has limited processing power and memory, and it’s split across every site hosted there.

During normal traffic, shared hosting is tolerable. During a heat wave — when search volume for “AC repair” triples and your site gets 3x normal traffic — the server gets overwhelmed. Your site slows to a crawl or goes down entirely, exactly when you need leads most.

Too many plugins

Each WordPress plugin adds code that runs on every page load. Contact form plugin, SEO plugin, slider plugin, analytics plugin, caching plugin (ironically), security plugin — they stack up.

The average HVAC WordPress site has 15-25 plugins installed. Many are inactive or duplicated. Each one adds processing time on the server and download time for the visitor.

  5. Lazy load below-fold images — only load images that are currently visible on screen. Images further down the page load as the user scrolls. Cost: free (built into WordPress and most modern frameworks).

  6. Use a CDN — services like Cloudflare (free tier available) serve your content from servers geographically close to your visitors. A visitor in Dallas gets your site from a Dallas server, not one in New York. Impact: 0.5-1 second improvement.

  7. Minify CSS and JavaScript — remove whitespace and comments from code files. This typically reduces file sizes by 20-30%. Most caching plugins do this automatically.
